5 Reasons to Drop Everything and Listen to House Music

Updated on 20/10/21

House music feels like dopamine. It’s almost guiltily un-intellectual: the bass, the drums, the vocals — repetitive, shallow, or nonexistent. But in spite of (or maybe because of) its simplicity, deep house music can infuse a subway ride with meaning — a long drive to nowhere with pedal-pumping adrenaline.

What is house music? It is both unapologetically primal and modern. It instills 21st-century life with depth, emotion, and motivation. And it can improve your mental health, focus, and drive right now.

What Is House Music?

House music is more than just a feeling. Technically, it’s 120 to 140 beats per minute and has what they call a “four-to-the-floor” beat. In other words, it has a lot of bass and little variation. Perfect for dancing.

It gained popularity in ’80s Chicago and its prevalence has ebbed and flowed since then. It is deeper than techno. It’s darker and slower than EDM. Its roots are in disco, chopped and screwed.

It’s like if you took the darkly addictive hook that makes a pop song good — and stretched it for as long as you want. DJ sets or 3 minutes songs of just that. No filler. No words... or just a few.

1. You Feel Good Almost Instantly

There is nothing to cure a bad mood — or crowded commute — like a healthy dose of bass. Listening to music that you like, in general, will release dopamine which elevates your mood.

But there’s something about house music’s depth and repetition that makes it even more unforgiving. It wants to make you feel good. Why not let it?

2. Embrace the Trance

House music has the ability to put you into a trance (even without illicit substances). For me, it can feel like embracing everything we’re told is bad about modern life — the isolation caused by technology, our increasing unwillingness to feel real emotions and boredom — just for a few minutes of hedonism.

People have been suffering for millennia without the ability to put on some headphones and blast deep house music. Why wouldn’t we enjoy it, every once in a while?

3. Focus — Or Have Fun While Trying To

A friend of mine once criticized my music as having “too few words.” In truth, most of the songs I listen to are either a) repetitive or b) almost wordless. To me, it’s nice to not listen to voices for a few minutes… just synth is just fine.

And word-less or limited songs are great for working. Excluding deep work, I enjoy listening to house music while I do menial things, like create spreadsheets or look up keywords. Thanks to that extra hit of dopamine, excel feels a lot more empowering.

4. Run to the House Music

People who listen to podcasts while working out are a mystery to me. Have they never head of house music? Nothing makes me want to run — as fast as I can for as long as I can. Nothing makes me walk a few blocks further than I have to. Is it just me, or does electronic music unlock untapped energy?

5. Music Is Supposed to Be Fun, Right?

If I want to feel sad, I’m going to read Virginia Woolf or any of the countless other beautiful, melancholic novels out there. I might even turn on a Leonard Cohen song, which is more like poetry than music.
